Player question
How does White Paper work in Sephiria?
Place White Paper between two Artifacts that share the same combo tag: one directly to its left and one directly to its right. Above and below do not satisfy this placement rule. When the setup is active, White Paper displays the matching combo icon and adds one count to that combo. Version 1.0.31 also fixed the display so both icons appear when two combos apply.
Working layout
Put matching combo tags on the left and right
Read this as a horizontal three-piece rule. The two outer Artifacts must share a combo tag; White Paper occupies the middle cell and adds one count to that shared combo.
Match: the same printed combo tag appears on both outer Artifacts.
Confirm: White Paper shows the tag icon and the combo counter increases by one.
01Use the two horizontal slots, not every touching slot
White Paper reads “adjacent” more narrowly than many players expect. Current player reports consistently describe the valid neighbors as the cells immediately to its left and right on the same row. An Artifact above or below the paper can touch it visually without satisfying the rule. Start by clearing those two horizontal cells before you move the rest of the board.
The two neighboring Artifacts must share at least one exact combo tag. White Paper then contributes one extra count to that shared combo. A practical community example is placing a Lake Artifact on each side: the two real Lake tags plus White Paper’s added count can reach a displayed Lake count of three. Treat the live combo panel as the final check because the rule depends on the tags, not on item color or theme.
- Valid pattern: matching combo Artifact → White Paper → matching combo Artifact.
- Keep all three pieces on the same horizontal row.
- Match the printed combo tag exactly; similar effects are not enough.
- Do not use the cells above and below as the two required neighbors.
02Confirm activation before you rebuild the inventory
After placing the three pieces, inspect White Paper itself and the combo counter. The paper should show the combo icon it is copying, and the relevant combo count should rise by one. This visual confirmation matters more than assuming the placement worked: an item may look related to a build while carrying a different tag, or one of the two neighbors may be offset by a row.
Version 1.0.31 changed White Paper so that both combo icons are displayed when two combos apply. That official patch record confirms that one arrangement can satisfy two shared tags and that the icons are intended as the player-facing activation signal. If only one icon appears, compare the complete tag lists on the left and right Artifacts instead of moving White Paper at random.
03Fix a White Paper layout that does not activate
Most failed layouts come from interpreting adjacent as all four cardinal directions or from matching an effect rather than a combo tag. Reduce the board to the three relevant pieces, verify the shared tag, and then add Tablets and unrelated Artifacts back around that core. This isolates the rule without forcing you to dismantle a working build repeatedly.
If the combo count still does not change, move the three pieces to a clean row and reopen the inventory or combo view. Record the version and capture the full board before reporting a bug. Because Version 1.0.31 explicitly changed White Paper’s icon display, the current combo counter and active effect are more reliable evidence than an old screenshot.
- Check that White Paper is in the middle, not at one end.
- Check that both neighbors are directly horizontal with no gap.
- Check that both neighbors share the same printed combo tag.
- Check White Paper’s icon and the live combo counter after moving it.
- Capture the full board and game version if the visual state disagrees with the count.
04Use White Paper to reach a threshold, not as a free combo
White Paper is most valuable when one additional combo count activates the next threshold without forcing you to carry another weak Artifact. Plan backward from the threshold shown in the combo panel: identify the category you are one count short of, find two useful Artifacts from that category, and reserve the three-cell horizontal strip they need.
The tradeoff is board pressure. White Paper needs a precise three-piece line, and preserving that line may reduce the number of useful Tablet contacts around the two neighboring Artifacts. Compare the gained combo threshold with the levels or effects lost by moving those pieces. The best layout is the one that keeps the threshold active without breaking the Artifact currently carrying the run.
