Player question
How does Hard Mode work, and how should I prepare for it?
The official 1.0 update confirms 18 Hard Mode elements and a maximum Hard Mode level of 60. Its elements can change enemy pressure, recovery, boss restrictions and starting conditions. The public notes reviewed here do not document the exact unlock trigger, so this guide focuses on confirmed rules and preparation instead of guessing the progression requirement.
01Understand what Hard Mode actually changes
Hard Mode is not a single flat damage toggle. The launch update records 18 elements and extends the system to level 60. Named examples are grouped under Demon, Plan and World labels, showing that difficulty can change enemies, player constraints and the composition of a run in different ways.
The official notes name Festival of Blood, False Vanguard, Deterioration, Tension, Heavy Heart and Proliferation among the additions. Those examples cover enemy healing, stronger mini bosses, reduced level-up restoration, potion restrictions during bosses, an occupied inventory slot and increased enemy counts. A route that succeeds under one pressure may fail under another even at a similar displayed level.
02Prepare around the selected pressure, not a generic tier list
Read the active elements before choosing what your build needs to solve. If healing is reduced, reliability and damage avoidance matter more. If potions are disabled during bosses, a route that depends on emergency recovery loses part of its safety. If Heavy Heart consumes inventory space, board layouts need to be tested with that unavailable cell rather than on an ideal empty grid.
Start from a weapon rhythm you can execute consistently. Then choose one route focus—guard stability, ranged control, elemental scaling, mobility or another clearly documented interaction. Do not add an item simply because it appears in a general tier list; record which Hard Mode condition it addresses and whether its effect is verified for the current version.
- Record the Hard Mode level and every active element.
- Record Solo or Co-op, weapon branch and game version.
- Capture the complete board rather than isolated item icons.
- Separate a successful clear from a repeatable, stable route.
03Evaluate builds with a repeatable run protocol
A useful Hard Mode build report needs more than the final damage screen. Record the weapon, core Artifacts, Tablets, major upgrades, chapter reached and reason the run ended. When two attempts use different elements, do not treat their results as a direct ranking. The conditions are part of the build test.
Repeat the same route across several runs before calling it stable. Roguelite offers vary, so a good build guide should explain substitutes and decision rules instead of requiring one perfect drop order. The Build Lab on this site labels frameworks and needs-review routes explicitly until repeated evidence supports a stronger status.
04Treat unlock instructions as a separate verification task
The first-party materials reviewed for this page confirm the scope and mechanics of Hard Mode but do not state a complete unlock sequence. Because progression requirements can change, this guide does not infer that sequence from chapter count, an achievement or a community comment.
If Hard Mode is unavailable in your save, record the completed chapter, ending state, current version and the exact menu state. A reproducible before-and-after sequence can be added to this page once verified. Until then, the confirmed preparation guidance remains useful without presenting an uncertain trigger as fact.
