01Make the shooting vine leave before chasing more damage
The small vine that fires at you has an answer beyond repeatedly running away: move close enough to provoke its swipe, dodge the swipe and let it retreat. Steam player sawyergrubert described this interaction on August 3. The original poster then reported winning the next attempt and credited the vine removal with making the fight easier to manage.
Treat the arena-filling vine attack as a movement task. The same reply warns that weapon recoil can move you into danger while attacking. Release the attack input for that pattern, steer clear of the hazards and re-establish your position before resuming damage. The successful player used a cold Greatsword setup; the reported clear does not require switching to the lightning recipe suggested elsewhere in the thread.
| What is pressuring you | Response to practice | When to attack again |
|---|---|---|
| Small vine shooting at you | Approach to provoke its swipe, dodge and let it retreat. | Reposition after the swipe rather than chasing damage through it. |
| Vines filling the arena | Release the attack input and concentrate on movement. | Resume after the dangerous pattern, with room for the weapon’s movement. |

02Guard tentacle bullets; move out of slam and laser warnings
TEAM HORAY’s 1.0 announcement explicitly makes bullets from Askard’s floor tentacles guardable from every direction. If you already use a guarding weapon, keep that defensive option available when those projectiles threaten your route. This is a rule for the named bullets: a guard response to a projectile does not establish that standing in a laser or a floor impact is safe.
The same update repairs missing warnings for the slam and laser attacks. Use those visible indicators to choose your next position before committing to another attack animation. Our suggested damage rhythm is deliberately simple: resolve the warning, make one short attack, then look again. If the next indicator has appeared, respond to it before adding another attack. This gives a slow weapon a clear stopping point without assuming an exact number of safe seconds.
| Attack cue | Response | Rule to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Bullets from floor tentacles | Use guard if your weapon provides it. | The 1.0 update allows these bullets to be guarded from every direction. |
| Slam or laser warning | Move out before committing to another attack. | The projectile guard rule is specific to the floor-tentacle bullets. |

03Spend spare currency on healing before the last stretch
Buy healing when you encounter a shop on the approach, rather than budgeting around an assumed final merchant. An August 6 player reached Askard carrying unused gold and asked why the Wastelands had no shops. The answer recommends buying potions earlier and notes that traveling shops can still appear there. Use an available merchant as your preparation checkpoint; a possible later shop is a bonus.
At that checkpoint, check your health, potion stock and the weapon you will actually use. Decide which input you will release during the floor-vine attack and which defensive action you can perform without losing track of the warning. Having that response ready is more useful than opening the fight while still deciding how the weapon behaves. Spend on the problem that has ended your recent attempts: supplies help a depleted arrival; they cannot choose a safe route for you.
If you have selected the Hard Mode element Tension, use the preparation window before entering: the official rule disables potion use during boss fights. Arrive with health restored and practice the vine response instead of planning an emergency drink mid-pattern. This changes how you use the shop advice, even when you bring the same weapon.

04After a clear, check the achievement and the next objective
Steam lists Enlightened Scholar with the condition “Defeat Askard.” Use that entry when checking your first Askard kill. Qliphoth Contractor is a separate achievement entry, so do not use its name as the confirmation target for this first-clear guide. Read the current quest objective after the encounter before deciding which progression guide you need next.
For another attempt, change one response that failed: remove the shooting vine if ranged pressure overwhelmed you, stop attacking if weapon movement caused a collision, or prepare supplies earlier if you arrived depleted. Keep the rest of the setup familiar long enough to judge that change. After a successful attempt, save the useful part of the result—the action that made a dangerous pattern manageable—alongside your weapon and game version.
